Horticulture in Latin America: Andes & Temperate South

A southern-hemisphere temperate belt with Mediterranean central Chile, cold Patagonia and the high Andes; the garden year runs September–April. Winter rain in Chile and summer rain in the pampas mean the same plant list does not travel far.

The climate, read as a season

Peak growth falls in Jan, Feb, Oct, Nov, Dec; dormancy in May, Jun, Jul. Hard frost is confined to Apr, May, Jun, Jul, Aug, and the driest months are Jan, Feb, Mar, Oct, Nov, Dec. Those three patterns decide the planting calendar more than the annual average temperature.

Growing conditions by season. Derived from the region's climate type, not a site forecast.

Peak growth
dry season · light frost
Plant, but keep protection for tender crops.
Summer

Peak growth
dry season · frost-free
The main planting and sowing window.
Autumn

Slow growth
drier spell · hard frost
Maintain, harvest and prepare the next season.

steady rain · hard frost
Dormant: prune, plan and protect.

What the climate demands

  • The Andes create sharp microclimates: frost, hail and UV change within a few hundred metres of altitude.
  • Central Chile's dry summer and the pampas' summer rain demand different irrigation and species strategies.
  • Patagonian wind and volcanic soils limit trees to wind-firm, lime-tolerant species.
